In this blog, you will know what Esports is all about and one of its known games, DOTA 2.

What is Esports?

Electronic Sports or most commonly known as Esports is a form of sports that uses specific devices and technology unlike contact sports that many of us know, needs many platforms such as stadium, ball and other specifics that are needed in the game. In this kind of sports, it uses video games as a platform where professionals players play by means of their avatar or character in a designated game such as, League of Legends (LoL), CS:GO, Fortnite, Dota2, and other games that require either individual or team strategy to play and battle for glory.

Esports was not always this popular because it started out as a simple competition for amateur and professional players whether online or a tournament in a specific town, city or country. But in the late 2000s, a massive explosion hit the Esports industry when a simple live stream competition between professional players from different countries became a hit that gave video game companies and other bodies the idea to create and fund different games that they will use for international tournaments.

By the year 2010, it became real and Esports has been one of the important factors for gamers all around the world funded by big-time game developers and sponsors like Mountain Dew, Red bull GmbH and Aquilini Investment group.

Types of Esports

Like in contact sports, Esports have different genres.

There are Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA), First Person Shooter (FPS), Battle Royals, Fighting Card Games, and Real-Time Strategy (RTA). Game franchises like LoL, DOTA, CS Go, Overwatch, StarCraft, and Super Smash Bros. are a few among the varieties of this industry.

DOTA 2 and its global competitions

In DOTA there are different majors like “The frankFurt Major in 2015, The Shanghai Major, Manila Major, Boston Major in 2016, The Kiev Major in 2017, The Bucharest Major, China Dota2 Supermajor, The Kuala Lumpur Major, The Chongqing Major in 2018 and Epicenter Major in 2019. These Majors are equivalent to the types of a league in football where the biggest event is the World Cup.

The competing and participating teams in the tournament mostly are invitations from teams that have won in a specific tournament or majors. But there are instances that a team can join via tryouts before a said major will start.

Last year the first Esports that was featured in a major sports competition were held at Manila, Philippines in the 2019 SEA Games which were represented by different countries.

The games they featured are Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (Gold: Philippines, Silver: Indonesia, Bronze: Malaysia), Hearthstone (Gold: Malaysia, Silver: Thailand, Bronze: Singapore), Arena of Valor (Gold: Thailand, Silver: Indonesia, Bronze: Vietnam), Dota2 (Gold: Philippines, Silver: Thailand, Bronze: Vietnam), StarCraft II (Gold: Philippines, Silver: Singapore, Bronze: Vietnam) and Tekken 7 (Gold: Thailand, Silver: Philippines, Bronze: Philippines).

The world of DOTA 2

Before the DOTA 2 that we all know and love today, in 2003 the original Dota or Defense of the Ancients was a mod game in Warcraft III: The Reign of Chaos and its sequel The Frozen Throne owned by Blizzard Entertainment. The mode made a huge impact on the industry of Esports so it deserved a game of its own.

However, in the year 2009, DOTA 2 was experiencing a downfall under Icefrog's management but Valve Corporation saw interest and potential in the game and decided to help Icefrog and create a modern sequel of the game.

Later that year they announced the creation of Dota2 and continued its popularity in the world of Esports today

Radiant or Dire you decide!

The original Defense of the Ancients doesn’t have much of a difference in DOTA2 but there are some additional features in DOTA2 that the original piece doesn’t have. Like the first one is, the concept of the game is to defeat the ancients of each team (original: Sentinel’s Ancient and Scourge’s Ancients, Dota2: Radiant’s ancients and Dire Ancients). Each team is composed of 5 players that will choose their avatar or heroes that consists of different abilities and fighting style. They have to collect battle experience and gold for them to be able to buy equipment for their heroes as the game progresses to make their heroes more powerful and effective than the other team. And that’s pretty much how Dota2 is played.
